What is hormone therapy?

The goal of Hormone Replacement Therapy is to restore hormone levels in the body back to the natural levels they were in an individual’s prime as these levels decline with age.

What are bio-identical hormones?

Bio-identical hormones are synthetic in nature but have the same molecular structure as the hormones naturally produced in the body. In addition to sharing molecular structure, bio-identical hormones have the same half-life as their organic counterparts meaning they metabolize in the same way.

How long does it take to feel the effects of hormone replacement therapy?

Each individual will react differently, but most patients feel effects in 2-4 weeks after starting therapy. Once a patient begins HRT, follow up lab work is done after 6 weeks to determine current levels and how well the therapy is working. At this point, the doctor is able to make adjustments, if needed, to optimize the treatment.

Is hormone replacement therapy safe?

There is ongoing research into the immediate and long term effects of HRT, and as with any medical intervention there are risks involved. Ongoing monitoring of medication dosing and blood levels, as well as the patient’s overall feeling of well being, are critical to making any HRT regimen as safe as possible.

Are there side effects of hormone replacement therapy?

As with any medication or therapy there is the chance for side effects. Some common side effects with HRT include increased acne, hair loss and/or unwanted hair growth, testicular atrophy, hot flashes, and increased blood hemoglobin.
